Capital of Myanmar - Yangon

 
   
     
 

King Alaungpaya of Konbaung Dynasty founded this capital city in 1755. Yangon is the capital and gateway to Myanmar, whose rich history is gently woven into the present, it is an evergreen city with lush tropical trees, shady parks, the spectacular pagodas and beautiful lakes. Yangon with elegant and aged colonial buildings which give the city a special appeal.

The oldest and most famous Buddhist shrine, Shwedagon Pagoda dating back over 2,500 year is the main attraction of Yangon. It is 110 m high, looking down onto the city from a hill. Its surface is plaited with over 30 tons of gold, brought since hundreds of years by millions of pilgrims.

Other attractions in Yangon are Sule Pagoda, National Museum, Jade and Gems Emporium, Bogyoke Aung San Park, People’s Square and People Park, Zoological Garden and Hlawga Wildlife Park.

Yangon International Airport is the main gateway and there are regular daily flights to Yangon from Bangkok and Singapore.

Thanlyin - Its surrounding offers many attractions. The old buildings still stand in evidence of the days of Portuguese occupation. Kyaik-Khauk Pagoda and Kyautan Pagoda in the creek are worth visiting.

Twante - It is a small town and the boat trip is a joy and chance to see the life along the cannel while it is a centre for pottery.

Allied War memorial cemetery - It has 27,000 tombstones of Allied soldiers who lost their lives in Myanmar during the World War II. It is a calm, peaceful place and is beautifully tended.

Bago - Located 80 km from Yangon, it was an ancient capital of Mon Kingdom in 15th century. It sports a large Pagoda and the largest reclining Buddha of the world.
