King Mindon of Konbaung dynasty founded the city in 1857. Mandaly was the last capital of the Myanmar Kings and the centre of culture and of many traditional arts. Mandalay is known for ivory and wood carvings , silk weaving and many other cottage industries. Mandalay presents fabulous scenes that are typical of their own.

A popular place to go is Mandalay Hill. Situated a couple of hundred meters above town, it offers an excellent view over the city. There are four staircases, one from each direction. A road leads part-way up to an escalator to the top. Today, it is the second largest city boasting its rich cultural heritage. The new airport of Mandalay has been officially opened on 17 September 2000. It is located about 37 km south-west of the city.

Amarapura - It was the capital of Konbaung Dynasty and has famous pagodas and interesting places. U Bein Bridge is famous one and it across the Taungthaman Lake. It is famous for cotton and silk weaving cottage industry.

In-wa (Ava) - It was an ancient capital known as the kingdom of In-wa during the second Myanmar Empire.

Sagaing - Located 21 km south-west of Mandalay on the west bank of the Ayeyarwady River. Once an ancient capital and has many worth visiting places. Today it is mainly a meditation center. Near the Sagaing Hill are over 600 monasteries for both monks and nuns.

Mingun - It was a town well-known for its Mingun Bell, the largest ringing bell in the world. It is almost 200 years old, 26 feet high and weighs 90.55 metric ton (55555viss). It is good to look at this gigantic bell and try to ring it.
